How To Get Referrals...Without Asking | Stacey Brown Randall

This week on Project Freelance I got to sit down and chat with Stacey Brown Randall, an author and business growth accelerator, to chat about how to get clients to refer you to their friends. 

 

You can't become a master unless you learn from a master, and Stacey Brown Randall is your sensei. Stacey is a business growth execrator who is the author of Generating Business Referrals without Asking, and hosts a podcast called Roadmap To Grow Your Business. Stacey works with small businesses and solopreneurs to help them accelerate their growth by generating referrals that they don’t ask for and creating sticky client experiences so their clients want to come work with them time and time again.

 

If you're anything like me, I got into business because I had to. I had a passion for photography and film and I knew that I would be better off, and happier, if I worked for myself, by making photography  and film my job. If you're the type of person that gets into business because you have a passion for something, like photography, music, film, or graphic design, you have to remember that you have to get good all all parts of business. 

 

If you don't build a referral campaign for your own business you will be struggling paycheck to paycheck, trust me. Referrals are the bread and butter of freelancing. 

 

Asking for referrals, offering commission for them, or putting a gimmick or line of text in your email signature, are all, what Stacey refers to as, "old-school methods." 

 

The most important thing about getting referrals is realizing that the conversation is NOT about you! Referrals are given because one person trusts the skills of the person they are referring to other people. The key to getting referrals is building a relationship with your clients, through your work ethic, communication skills, and your referral language, which Stacey teaches in her Growth by Referrals program. 

 

Referrals are the best type of prospect to receive, because the person already trusts you because you were referred to them. Your clients trust your work and you have to believe that you are worth referring. You busted your butt to get to where you are, so why wouldn't you be worth referring?
