What is Vero?
I first heard about the new Vero - True Social App via Instagram and was pulled in by its sleek logo design. I decided to download the app and give it a scroll through, and you guys, I have to say, I haven't been this excited about a social media app since...well..ever. We have always had limitations on what we can post and how we can post it on apps like Tumblr, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc. For example, instagram is a photo/video sharing site. Twitter is for short, condensed thoughts (posting links on twitter sucks), and Facebook posts don't even reach your audience or friends, unless you sell your right kidney. I can't tell you how much I've spent on facebook and instagram marketing, to only see few click throughs or attention. Vero, however, is different.
Vero boasts a powerful manifesto that is making it stand out from it's competitors. They say, "unlike most of our competitors, Vero’s business model isn’t based on serving advertisements. As a subscription-based service, our users are our customers, not the product we sell to advertisers.
Our subscription model will allow us to keep Vero advertising-free, and to focus solely on delivering the best social experience instead of trying to find new ways to monetize our users’ behavior or tricking them back into the app with notifications.
As a thank you to our first million users, we are waiving their annual subscription fee, for life."
So, not only are there no ads, but there is an opportunity to be a part of something exclusive, which is obviously why we are all so drawn to it. The idea of limiting the number of free accounts there can be, it makes people anxious, because they might miss out on something. It's similar to bitcoin. There are only "21 million Bitcoins that can be mined in total. Once miners have unlocked this many Bitcoins, the planet's supply will essentially be tapped out, unless Bitcoin's protocol is changed to allow for a larger supply." - Investopedia
Key To Success for Creators
This app will give creators the opportunity to actually reach their audience, without being drowned by ads or getting fucked from analytics. This means not only will your followers and friends be sent your post WHEN you post it, but you can also sell things through the app, without your users having to first click through an advertisement, or go to your "link in bio." Let's face it, we are all sick of saying that, so thanks Vero for making this app! Haha
By giving artists and creators the ability to sell to their audience directly, means that we will have higher sale rates. It's a no brainer.
Where does Vero get their money? Well, after those first 1million subscriptions, the app will be converted into an annual subscription. If you sign up before it hits 1mill, you get the app for free, for life. Oh, incentives..
They will also take a small fee for each sale you make through the app, which is more than fair. They also waive the fees if you're trying to promote a fundraiser, charity, etc.
Censorship
We now live in a network where we are constantly being targeted and harassed through our favorite social media apps by companies trying to make a quick buck. Making creators PAY TO GET THEIR CONTENT SEEN IS SO BEYOND FUCKED UP! Vero won't do that. No ads. No scheme, other than the clever incentive. :p As an LGBT member I have seen the effects of the Youtube Apocalypse. I used to make a decent paycheck out of my channel, with over 1 million views, 40K subs, and now about 90% of my videos are "non-advertiser friendly." I made a check for $33 last month. This is what happens when A. people get greedy (and they always will) and B. The government gets involved. So, fingers crossed that the Vero team doesn't get get greedy, or at least not right away. Let us put the "social" back in "social media."
Risks/Concerns
There are obviously a lot of people who are concerned about a few screenshots floating around, showing the terms and conditions of the Vero App, which states, "In accordance with your choice of the privacy settings offered by the Service, by posting or otherwise making available any User Content on or through the Service, you hereby grant, and you represent and warrant that you have all rights necessary to grant, to Vero a limited, royalty-free, sublicensable, transferable, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive, worldwide license to use, reproduce, modify, publish, list information regarding, translate, distribute, syndicate, publicly perform, publicly display, make derivative works of, or otherwise use your User Content, including (without limitation) your name, voice, and/or likeness as it is contained within your User Content, in whole or in part, and in any form, media or technology, whether now known or hereafter developed."
People read that and automatically assume that the app is going to take their content and make money off of it. First of all, you're using their app so they're making money off of you in one way or another. Vero takes a fee from sales and subscription packages, which is how they're making their money. They aren't trying to steal your shit. ALSO! READ THE REST OF THE DAMN PARAGRAPH YOU DOOFS!
"This license is not being used by Vero to sell your User Content to third parties or otherwise profit off of your User Content in any way unrelated to Vero providing and promoting the Service, and it does not give Vero any rights to own your User Content or limit your ability to use your User Content however you wish outside of the Service."
